Hi, I’m Take — born and raised in Fujinomiya. On this blog I share practical, local tips for visitors so you can enjoy the area like a friend of a local.
Is it raining or cloudy today? I often hear travelers say, “I came all the way to Fujinomiya, but I can’t see Mt. Fuji… what should I do?”
I understand your disappointment. Mt. Fuji is shy and often hides behind clouds. But please don’t stay in your hotel room! A rainy day is actually the perfect chance to experience “Real Japanese Daily Life.”
Just a 3-minute walk from the station, Aeon Mall Fujinomiya is a massive shopping center and a savior for tourists on rainy days. Here is a local’s guide on how to enjoy the mall like a treasure hunt.
1. The Supermarket is a “Food Museum”
Head to the grocery section on the 1st floor. This is the best place to find authentic souvenirs at local prices.
- Unique Sweets: You can find Matcha KitKats, Pocky, and other Japanese snacks much cheaper than at souvenir shops.
- Deli Corner: Tempura, Yakitori, Sushi, and Bento boxes are lined up freshly made. If you are too tired to go to a restaurant, buying dinner here and eating at your hotel is a great option.
- Local Tip: If you go in the evening (around 7 PM), look for “yellow discount stickers.” You might join the battle with local housewives for the best deals!
2. The 100-Yen Shop (DAISO)
If you need souvenirs for many friends but have a limited budget, visit DAISO. Almost everything in the store is 100 yen (plus tax). You will be amazed by the quality of Japanese stationery, folding fans, chopsticks, and clever kitchen gadgets. My international friends often spend over an hour here.
3. Gachapon (Capsule Toys)
Check out the area lined with capsule toy machines. From anime characters to realistic animal figures and weirdly funny items, you never know what you’re going to get. Use your leftover 100-yen coins and enjoy the excitement. It’s fun for both kids and adults.
4. Easy Dining at the Food Court
Ordering at a traditional Japanese restaurant can be intimidating if you don’t speak the language. The food court is very tourist-friendly:
- Visual Menus: Most shops have plastic food models or photos. You can just point and order.
- Variety: Ramen, Udon, Takoyaki, Burgers—everyone in your group can choose what they want.
- Free Water: Self-service water stations are available.
Access: How to Get There
Aeon Mall Fujinomiya (イオンモール富士宮)
- Location: Just south of JR Fujinomiya Station.
- By Foot: Take the pedestrian bridge from the station exit. It takes about 3 minutes. You can see the huge building from the station platform, so you won’t get lost.
- Google Map: View on Google Maps
Summary
Aeon Mall might not be a historical site, but it is where you can see what modern Japanese people eat, buy, and how we spend our weekends.
Enjoy shopping without getting wet! By the way, if the rain stops, check out the rooftop parking area. It has a stunning, unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji when the weather clears up.
